I'm a newbee and need some help. I recently obtained an All Lines license in Florida.  What should I do now? I still have no idea how to write a claim. I've sent a resume online to different places but have had no luck.  Thanks!

Spend hours reading and reviewing this web site, particularily everything to do with "getting started", 'newbie, etc.

The basic questions you ask are all answered many times within this web site.

Come back when you have narrowed down your questions to specific issues, and you will get specific answers.

A license means very little in the real claims world.

Don't misunderstand my intent, but read this site thoroughly, to get a good feel for all the discussion about your concerns.

Take an adjuster 101 class.  Take an Xactimate, Simsol, or Integra class.  Try to do ride alongs with seasoned adjusters in your area.  Order the software from each of the above companies, and scope your house, friends, relatives etc.  Listen to other adjusters!  Getting the license is the easy part.  Best of luck.

I assume you are talking cat work.
1st ask yourself, do I really want this career and can I really afford this career. The post above advises you spend thousands of dollars with no guarentee of work. If this is what you want, talk the couses and learn. Then join the list of hundreds of new adjusters waiting for a chance. (But be prepared that you may not get work this year).

Lisa,

I guess the question that comes first is: WHY?
Then: WHAT was there that caused you to go out and obtain an adjuster license? (Maybe a redundant question but I cannot fathom someone going to the trouble of obtaining a license without an idea of what to do with it.)

Have to explain a little more of your background and reasoning.

All of the above is good advice.  In addition I would suggest you go under LINKS above and get some additional training with companies such as All Lines Training, Walker Group, Vale National, Catastrophe Training Schools or Insurance Claims Training School.  My pick would be Vale National if you have the time and financial means.  Training with Walker Group could lead to employment with their catastrophe team.

I have taught several classes to new people with a license and no experience. AS I did not sell the license class to them I can tell the rest of the story.

It goes like this: If one monster  hurricane or three cat 2"s do not hit the US this year, you will not work in 2006. If the same happens in 2007 you will not work that year. In the spring or 2008  if you can spell adjuster you can work the hail season as all the new and old adjusters will be starved out, as well as the license mills.

Greetings Lisa,

I would also suggest that you possibly take advantage of some of the help and guidance that is available through a wonderful group of adjusters at http://www.claimsmentor.com .  This forum is led by a very dedicated lady by the name of Deborah Ward.  I am sure that between the vast stores of information here on CADO and the dedicated mentor volunteers (ie TRADER) that give of themselves at claimsmentor you will find your way.

Best of Luck
Craig

Get familiar with the computer and adjusting software.  It seems like as many people fail at this business because they can't become proficient with the software as because they can't scope a job.

I think that I will go ahead and say what others are all thinking and open myself up to a salvo. You know that poop by any other name still smells the same. Just my 1/2 cent cause that is all that I have in my pea size noggin. Remember we are all getting jumpy and have some form of cabin fever. This is what you call blowin off steam and it is all in jest (that's fun Cletus not jest because)

Sexual harrassment?...doubtful. Inappropriate?...maybe. Especially to a unknown newcomer looking for serious advice. She may not get the Cletus. I have seen some of the "regulars" treat newbies asking question in far more shameful ways. Lisa,Check the active topics in the forums. I recently posted my experiences and thoughts while attending Vale National's three week property course. As a seasoned Cat Adjuster my view was a bit different than those that were new to the industry and attended with me. Attending Vale, for example, will give you a basic foundation for this career field. You will need to expand upon the education provided there by attending seminars, adjuster boot camps (Traders), software classes, etc. Plus seek out a mentor or two. My brother and nephew attended this class with me plus they received their all-lines in Florida, as well. Now they will spend some time in the field with me on my next assignments. Just like Trader stated above, it may take several big cats in a row before you get a chance to work. Thats just the nature of this business. It takes a great deal of prep work and money and still there is no guarantee that you will get a call. With that said, concentrate on making yourself more "marketable". Also, as stated above, every question that can come into someones brain while contemplating this line of work has been addressed somewhere in the archives. Save yourself some grief and explore what CADO has to offer.

Well, I had the pleasure of meeting Cletus while on a storm in St Louis recently.   He is actually an outstanding person that thinks all of us should be helping other adjusters by sharing what we have learned over the years.  He has a passion for his occupation and everyday is a great day to him.  He gave me some great advice and shared a lot with me.

Hi friend.   I finally got registered on CADDO.  I am adjuster gary.  If you get chance, e-mail me and let me know how the mountains are.  I am home and looking for work.  Doesn't seem to be much.  Hope all is well .  Look at my note on the getting started forum.

Thank you to all who posted advice.  I recieved a call today from a person from "US Staffing" to possibly place me on their roster. However, I first have to successfully complete 2 or 3 of their courses in Dallas. Any advice on this company?  Are they just trying to sell me their courses?

Ask them this. How  many adjusters do they have and their contracts how many adjusters would they deploy for a moderate hurricane. Bet they will not answer. But they will suggest their courses. That's where the money is at this time.

I did, they claimed they need to double their number of adjusters. (I can't remember their exact numbers) They also said they were #3 on FEMA's list and that they handle all of Home Depot's claims.

To all....Cletus did not offend me in anyway.  I might be a newbie, but I do have a sense of humor.

Lisa,I believe that there is several threads on CADO with some of them recent concerning this company. I would be careful of blindly attending classes just to get on a company's roster. This has become a good profit center for many companies based on the post on this site. Personally, I think that your money would be better spent pursuing other avenues that will make you more "marketable" to all companies. I know that because we are in the depths of hurricane season you may feel pressure to get on someone's roster before the "big one" hits. However, I would rather spend this season and most of next year eating up every opportunity to educate myself on residential property construction, proper claims handling, and insurance policy knowledge. It is far better to be deployed confident that you can assist an Insured properly than to rush in unprepared and struggle, at best. Not trying to rain on your parade. Just my honest thoughts.

I've received a similar call every week for the past several weeks. They leave me a message. I haven't called them back yet. I'll call them tomorrow to ask about the courses.

Did they say you have to pay for the courses? Sounds too vague. I'll call and dig deep to find out exactly what the deal is. Don't throw good money after bad (I have no idea what that means). Just don't dig a financial hole for yourself. This may be a quiet season and you may not work unless you become a staff adjuster, which is a great place to start to get experience and to have stability.

And, I absolutely adore Cletus. He's a lot like all of us. He says things that make some people upset, but he has a heart of gold and when he realizes he may have hurt some feelings, he apologizes. Well, okay, so he’s not like all of us. He’s like most of us. Some of us are too pig headed to apologize or even admit we should have found a better way to say something or to have not said it at all. It think it’s referred to as measuring our words before we weigh others down with them. Yep! Cletus has what “some” of us lack; a balanced scale. God love ya’ Cletus.

And your alter ego.
