A number of years ago I worked with another guy who had a belt clip system for his 35' tape. It was a magnetic back that had 3 rounded projections on it that screwed on to the tape measure. The other part was a sturdy belt clip piece with a metal plate that had 3 rounded indentations it it. All you had to do was twist the measure off to release it and when you put it back on the 3 projections lined up with the indents to make sure the tape was always in the right position. Does anyone remember this item and if so where can I find one?

We bought something similar earlier this year from a very nice lady. Linda chreia@msn.com It came with an inexpensive tape measure for $10. Kim

There are a couple of versions of the tape measure magnet available. You can "Google" for them or go to Ebay. I've used one for years and cannot do without it. Well, I probably could ............ I just don't want to.

I believe this is what you are looking for: http://www.endeavorproducts.com/fgrip/fgrip.html I just ordered two of them on their web site. You can use an credit card or send them a check or money order. Excellent way to hold the tape and pencil.

Tom, How does the unit attach to the tape? From the photo, I'm assuming you pull the factory clip and reuse the screw hole to attach the magnet? I've always just used a leather tape holder (carpenter's bags type) and have always had good luck; but this system looks pretty good. Less likely to fall off/out. Either way, I always carry two tapes, in case I drop one off the roof while I'm using it. Thanks, Eric

We recieved the holders, but have not put them on a tape yet. The magnet is attached with a 3M tape pad. Not sure I like that, but it must work. Time will tell. Looks like a good unit, well built.

I was told by an adjuster who has used these for a while that when you screw the plate onto your tape, you should use a little 'Shoe Goo' to hold the tape measure in place so it doesn't spin on the bracket. Just got one, and so far (sigh) haven't used it this season. Best to all, Betrock

Just don't use a glue that is "too permanent;" in case you need to replace the tape for any number of reasons. As an aside, if you do need a permanent glue, there is nothing better than Gorilla Glue.

I have always wanted a toolbelt that had a pocket that would hold a clipboard. I saw one of those fancy $125 custom jobs they sell, but that thing was a bit of overkill. It really had too much stuff and might be a little cumbersome, especially on a roof or in tight quarters. It did have a pocket underneath the main pouch where you could slide a clipboard in and a little loop of elastic to keep it from coming out. Anyone seen anything like that in a smaller version?

I just tuck the clipboard into the back of my waistline and up the ladder I go; works every time.

Jim Hitt, I have had the CatManDo belt since Ivan. You can take every pouch off of the belt as they slid off and I have never lost a measuring tape out of the pouch designed to hold it. The best thing about the Belt is you can climb a roof hands free and it saves you the trip back to the truck for what you left behind.

Thanks Ranger. I didn't look that closely at the belt, but that would make sense. Eric had good advice about tucking the clipboard into the back of your pants. Though I will say that was a lot easier at when I was 38 instead of 58 and 170 pounds instead of 190! Unfortunately I know the solution to that problem, but it is easier to buy a tool belt. Thanks everybody. Hope we all get see each other on the storm soon. You'll recognize me. I'll be the fat guy with the new tool belt.

That's funny Jim. I can't speak to being 58; I turn 38 on Wednesday. But I can speak to the weight, and I'm not letting you off the hook at 190. I'm 6'8'' and weigh 270#. If I can do it, so can you. The key is making sure the clipboard's clip points up and out. LOL. Hope to see you out there my friend. (I know we've never met, but I like you already)

ORIGINAL: Tom_Toll I believe this is what you are looking for: http://www.endeavorproducts.com/fgrip/fgrip.html I just ordered two of them on their web site. Tom, if you look a few posts higher, that is the same one that failed on me (with the 3 magnets). It is made by Endeaver, and I called them about 6 months ago before buying mine, because at that time the one and only review on Amazon said it was terrible. I spoke with an engineer there, he assured me they fixed the problems, and admitted some of the older models had weaker magnets and could fall off. Those ones were red, the new yellow ones were supposed to be great - and I had seen a happy roofer using one. But the 3 magnet system is not holding the tape as securely as I need. I do construction work between storms, and I had the 35 foot tape fall off the holder too many times to trust it. I almost had a tape bounce off the roof onto a parked car in the driveway, and I will NEVER trust that design. This is after the tape started "spinning" on the screw because the foam tape they provide has too much air in it. I pulled the screw (again) and put in some super strong 3M body molding tape, which stopped the spinning - but a fat max will bump out of that holder if you are moving fast and bump it with your arm. The other style (sold at OSH...) has one huge magnet, is harder to pull off, but WILL NOT come off when you don't want it to. The only bummer with it, was that you can't thread a belt "through" it, you just clip the holder onto the belt. I had the entire assembly come off my belt (holder and all) when running. So I drilled out the center, but a big fender washer through the back so the "clip" became a loop to thread the belt through. That thing is bullet-proof, and I trust it (picture attached). I also have the exact belt pouch thing that "Gimmie Roofs" pointed out from Lowes (by AWP) and use that for 100 foot tape, camera bag, etc, works great.
