Waste factor on any gable roof is 10% unless it is so cut up and has 10 or 15 0ffsets and different pitches etc. then you might bump it up to 12.5% but not for a straight gable with 2 dormers as you describe. But be sure to measure the "overlap" under the overhang of the dormers.

Dave -
I wouldn't add more than a standard 10% on a cedar gable roof. That would be extremely generous since cedar shakes / shingles are one of the roof coverings that you can use virtually ever piece that comes out of bundle. You don't have to cut partial tabs and the only extra you are looking at is the starter course.

Note that all of this also depends on the exposure. Here in Lubbock, There are many cedar shingle roofs with 4",5" and 6"' exposures. Homeowner has paid extra for this and there is a formula to calculate the extra waste for low exposures.

Todd is 100% correct.

Each area has differing exposures to the weather. Also it depends on the use of 18" or 24" shingles/shakes.

The norm in some areas is 10" to the weather, and in others 7-8 to the weather.

On my home, porch roof, which is a 4/12 pitch are laid them 3.5 to the weather, while the main sections of the home are laid at 7", all using 24" royals.

The waste factors , depending on the pitch, the difficulty and the exposure can vary from 10% to as much as 20%.

Also check the starters, as in Amarillo, I have seen double starters used and a hip/ridge cap laid with only 6" exposure. All of these little extras cost the owner money.
