Larry, forgive me. I forgot to mention you can use the FAT MAX as a sword or a club.
I was going to post that info on another thread.

Your craftsman will break. Then you have to stuff all the pieces in the glove box til you remember to go back to sears, wait in line, explains to the little girl behind the counter how it broke, how disappointed you are that sears would sell such a thing, and they will give you another one... Then you can do this all over again....and again...and again..

Keep :)'n

The fat max 35.  That 11' stiff part comes in handy, but the ones I broke all break at the 11' mark.  I have the trimble laser and would not recomend it.  It works great but is built like a box, all square with square corners.  No ergonomics and it can take two hands to operate.  The one I wish I had is made by Hilti.  Here in the New Orleans area there is a hilti store and a lot of the guys have bought that one.  Its small, lightweight, and works great.  Didn't ask the price because I have the trimable.  Regardless of brand, the laser is the way to go for flood!  Works great anywhere you can see the dot.

Just an FYI, I picked up a 35' Fatmax equivilent tape at Target of all places. It's 1 1/4" wide and will extend out 11' or so just like the fattie does. It's made by Durabuilt which is the house brand for Target. Has a little brake button on the bottom so you won't lop a finger off when the tape retracts. Comes with a lifetime guarantee and it's only $8.99.

HA!  I can't believe all of you that actually measure stuff.  My foot is about 12" long, and my stride is around 2.648'.  Works great.  Low cost, relatively quick.

Seriously, anyone without a Disto (or similar brand) is nuts.  I personally carry a 25' regular tape and a 100' long tape (with me), but I'm going to switch to one of those new power-tapes becasue that seems fasters.

The only thing that scared the hell out of me -- I've tried metal long tapes and plastic long tapes (both with tennis balls on the end).  One time my long tape got stuck, so i had to walk (believe that chit?) to the end of the roof, at which point I had 3 wraps of it around an electrical mast/wires.  Really lost interest in metal tapes.

BUT as a more serious point -- what about moisture meters?  I'm bored, and thinking of buying one, don't really think I need it, but I've had a couple of  "moisture" claims.  Of course, the one I like is $600+.

So, what can people tell me about the moisture meters?  I'm looking at the type that are both pin read and electro - so I can get both readings if I need them.

AND since this regular tape measure conversation is getting bored -- Who out there had Cougar Paws -- these damn things are great!

I went through the moisture meter 'stage' about 3 years ago, but thank goodness got over it and didn't yield to the temptation to razzle dazzle. Forget high tech, the only real way to convince an insured there is no moisture behind the wall is to open the wall anyway.

I recommend a good drywall saw which is less than $5 bucks and invest the rest in a good stock or mutual fund and you'll be way ahead of the game.

Now the Disto or Trimble (my choice), that's another story.......................

Hilti PD30 unbelievable, paid for itself in my first 3 story office building. Deminsioned the whole building in less than 1.5 hours by myself. I walk through with a dictaphone and call out the measurements and damage. If you are not using a laser, you are backing up.

FYI - Home Depot's website currently has the Hilti PD30 for $174.50.  This price point is good thru 12/25.

The Hilti vs. Disto laser race at the bar is not nearly as exciting as the Stanley vs. Craftsman tape measure race.

there are sure a lot of options for tape measures, can get very confusing for newbies, guess this is something we learn from trial and error!

I have used the old Disto 5A (now the classic 5A) for about 18 months and I couldn't live without it. That being said I have a buddy that bought a Hilti laser for about $350 and its much smaller and just as accurate. If I lost mine I would buy the Stanley version for $99 - its actually made by Disto and an adjuster typically doesnt need the $250+ of extra features. Unless it's overcast I generally don't use it outside.

I always used a Craftsmans 30' tape for the warranty but I will gladly pay the $25-$30 for the 30' FatMax - no tape comes close in my opinion.

I, too have had a Disto for years and it has made my life a lot better.

My son-in-law followed my suggestion to check Home Depot on the web and ordered the Stanley TM-1 for $49.95.  This can only be done over the internet or through their catalog orders.

Tomorrow is the last day of the special pricing.

Tomorrow is the last day of the '05 Christmas season as well.

Merry Christmas!!

Needless to say the distotape is about the best investment I have made in adjusting. That laser beam does not bend like a tape, and so it is more accurate. Just knock off the 5/8" and go with the closest inch. I will say though that the instruction manual is cryptic and so I am still learning how to use it.

On the roof, I use a 35 ft. FatMax with the tabs on the top (number)side of the end stop cut or ground off, this allows me to flip the tape upside down so that it can slide back up the roof without catching tabs. For almost everywhere else, as a licensed Disto and Trimble distributor, I recommend checking out the new Disto A5.  Smaller, better range without a target plate, and a better viewfinder make it the best disto ever.    If you want something even smaller, try the new A3, the smallest laser on the market.  (smaller than the Hilti)   Check my website at www.distagage.com for the best selection of true laser measuring devices, or give me a call, toll free, at (877) 423-4786 to talk about which unit would be best for you.   Mention Catadjuster.org, or type CADO in the coupon code at checkout for a 10% discount.

Lowes has Strait-Line 50 ft laser on clearance for $22.  Note that Strait-Line has a rebate through 01/31/06 for $10 off any purchase.  Net cost $12.  I can not attest to accuracy, etc as I just found rebate tonight.  If it's not all that, then as noted it is good entertainment for small animals.

I treated myself to a Stanley fatmax TLM100 laser measure and used it on my first claim today.  I LOVE this thing!  I scoped a room in less than 2 minutes.  It not only impressed me, but also the insured.  I don't know how I went without it for as long as I have.

On windy days I use a 35' Stanley Fat Max on a roof and on non-windy days I use a 35' Stanley PowerLock because it retracts faster.  I also use a Stanley 100' cloth tape measure for measuring long roof ridges and fences.   I use a Disto for interior measurements and I use the Fat Max in the interior for measuring small offsets.
