Gale, how has the tablet worked out so far? I wasn't able to attend PLRB, as I've been in FL going through a course to get my ACA designation, or i would have stopped by to see it in action. I hope it's an investment well spent! my X41 has been working wonderfully so far. I brought it to my class to take notes with, and ended up demonstrating it's versatility, specifically with powerclaim during one of the breaks. To say the least my professor was quite taken with it, as were most of the students who gathered. I haven't gotten to use it out in the field yet, but I'm going to do some test runs of it doing some mock damage assessments with some of my relatives properties. I'll definitely keep you posted on how it's working for me. -Justin

Justin, the IBM X-41 tablet is great and with Development receiving the Disto with Bluetooth on Friday for our project to move measurements from the Disto directly into PowerClaim XML the X-41 with the Bluetooth option will be our main test bed I expect but since the Stargate Mobile is Bluetooth enabled we may check it out as well. We had the X-41 and the Stargate Mobile 8.4 slate with the touch screen and full sunlight option at PLRB and naturally both caught a lot of attention. A sales rep with Motion was walking the aisles doing demos and it was nice but it is not a touch screen but more like the IBM X-41screen it seemed to me. The Stargate Mobile was running XP Pro so it does not do handwriting recognition like the IBM running XP Tablet PC operating system. I liked the large pop up touch screen keyboard on the Stargate Mobile but it covered about half of the screen. The ability to hover the mouse with the IBM X-41 was consider a big plus by our staff so I would like to see the Stargate Mobile running the XP Tablet PC OS. Since the Stargate Mobile uses the old PDA style pen I am not sure if it could handle the Tablet PC OS. What I would like hear from Dave and others with the IBM X-41 and other brands in that class to report how they worked out for them when actually using them in the field to run claims. How was the viewing ability of screen and did they find the handwriting recognition feature very useful? Keep us posted on your experience. We are going to closely followed the sub $1K new slates to be hitting the market soon. The one thing I noticed about the IBM X-41 during the training classes at PLRB is it is much slower that the Dell Notebook that is a couple years old that Training normally uses. The fact that you can get 2-3 more powerful notebooks for the price of one X-41 Tablet with Bluetooth, docking station and CD will prevent many carriers from moving to the Table PC overnight.

I just wanted to jump in here. I have had a Motion Computing pen-tab/slate for almost 4 years now and I have xactimate and xactimate 24 on it as well as autocad and microsoft project and timberline.(if you can't tell I do ALOT of estimating.)This has been one of the best purchases I have ever made. It works flawlessly whether I am drawing in a diagram, signing paperwork dictating jobsite notes, it doesn't matter it works flawlessly. I had a printer set up in the truck so I could write the estimate and contract while talking to the homeowner print /send and it would print in the truck while I was still talking to the HO. Download price updates onsite it would do everything but the dishes. I have used and demoed other pen tabs however none have the functionality of the Motion. It even has as an option a keyboard that clips on and weighs next to nothing. I have had it on roofs in crawl spaces and in attics. If you have not actually test driven one you should. Motion has its own website and sells direct to the public so you don't have to worry about "bundled" garbage ware.

Rick, we need more concrete input like yours. Field trails are all that really count. The rep at PLRB showed us the Motion and it looked great.

If you don’t mind me asking, how much does all that cost and where do you go to buy it? Thanks.

I am now using a Panasonic Toughbook and MWDU (mobile wireless display unit). The Toughbook stays in the van while I am completing my scope with the MWDU, which weighs in at about one pound roughly. Since I carry a toolbelt while I scope I purchased a holster that is built for the MWDU and I can just place it in there while I am shooting a measurement or climbing the ladder. The range between the MWDU and the Toughbook is listed at 300', but I have had it much further. You can check these systems out at www.toughbooksales.com. I actually stopped in Atlanta on my way to an event in NC and checked out these systems before purchasing them. They also have a tablet (RF-18) that is very nice and light, as well.

Hey Rick, If a couple of friends and I bought your drinks, would you be willing to show us your Exactimate 24 running on the Motion and how you work through a scope? We are all experienced and not looking for instruction, just adaptation. I did the Fema Housing inspection thing 8 years ago and loved the tablet. I recognize how efficient this can be and shaving an hour a day can boost productivity exponentially. I live down in Bacliff and can meet anywheres convenient for you. If you are unavailable, we do appreciate your posts.
