KileAnderson -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (4/25/2004 10:15:27 AM)

Jim, I like Delorme. I've tried several other software packages for my laptop and Delorme is superior to all of them. I also like their new GPS reciever linked to my laptop as my maping and navigation combo. I have an IPAQ with bluetooth and have thought of using it but here are the downsides.

First the screen is just too darn small. Remember you will need to be able to glance at it while you are driving and figure out how far it is until the next turn and do all of this safely. If you are squinting to see the tiny screen on your PDA you will have your eyes off the road longer than is necessary.

Second, you can only load small maps into the PDA. I have every street in the US on the hard drive of my laptop. If you are covering a large area like I am right now, you would have to reload maps into your PDA everynight and they wouldn't be nearly as detailed as what you can get on your laptop.

Third, the expense. Even if you alread own a PDA with built in bluetooth, you still have to purchase the blue tooth adapter for the GPS receiver which is a couple of hundred bucks by itself. If you already have a laptop you can get the Delorme software and reciever for $129 and that's all you need to turn your laptop into a high quality navigation system.

I haven't tried the stand alone units by Garmin. I have an friend who is a manager for a vendor that uses one, but he doesn't have to go to a handfull of addresses everyday. He just has to drive to the storm office and then he doesn't use it again until he has to drive to another storm. If you have to program dozens of addresses into it every week I think it would become somewhat of a pain as they don't have a keyboard like your laptop and they take a while to input just 1 address. Also, you go back to my first point, they have a very small screen. Which is fine if you are just using them on the interstate but when you are in a crowded city or neighborhood with lots of interstections it can get to be a problem.

Bottom line is, get the Delorme software and USB receiver and use the laptop you already own. Anytime you can squeez more use out of equipment you already own that is just providing more profit to your own bottom line.

Hope this helps.

I use Pharos Ostia on my PDA (Ipaq) and it works like a charm. It has voice navigation and a split screen. At a glance you can see the direction of your next turn, name of the street and distance until the turn. Also it has auto reroute so if you get off course it will automatically reroute you. The one downside is sometimes it takes you the long way around. Try it you will like it.

IMHO DeLorme is the only way to go. Successful experience since 1995.

Prefer Street Atlas 9.0 to Streets 2-003/04.

okclarryd -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (6/5/2004 6:11:16 AM)

I agree (for a change) that Delorme is at the absolute top of the ladder. Nuttin' finer.

However-----------I just loaded up '04 and I'm going back to the '03 program. The '04 is slower (???) and the trail from the GPS doesn't ever go away. It just gets longer and longer. If you're working a neighborhood or crossing your tracks during the day (and THAT never happens. Right?) the trail gets so confusing that you don't know if you're going to or from.

The '03 program is faster to respond to input and the trail disappears as you go along. Eventually, that is. But, it does disappear.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

katadj -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (6/5/2004 1:28:51 PM)

OK,

Just go to the GPS tab and "clear" the trail.

Then continue on your merry way. If all else fails, well you know the rest.

AllCatMan -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (6/5/2004 11:02:29 PM)

The newest version of DeLorme 2004 is not too bad when you get use to it. I ran 9.0 for the ease and speed, but I was missing too many addresses. And once I learned how to import the map file from Integra it made it easy to map out my storm at the onset, to set appointments so the claims were as close as possible. I just import all my claims and then zoom in on 7 or 8 for each days appointments. I think it is great, and the few that miss, I can always use my air card internet connection to check on Map Quest for the address.
If you are having trouble getting the addresses from integra map file over message me and I will try to help you.

jonasb -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (9/6/2004 8:01:43 AM)

FYI Sam's Club has Delorme GPS/2005 software package for $105 ($24 off msrp).

HailTech -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (12/27/2004 11:26:59 PM)

I started using Microsoft Streets and Trips with the USB GPS receiver on my laptop this year and have been pleasantly surprised with its performance. I have used many other different systems and have found this one to have a very intuitive interface and many other extra trip features I like. You can buy it at Best Buy for 119.99.

waynem -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (12/27/2004 11:42:50 PM)

I use Magellin 700 GPS and it works great, it cost a bundle but i figure it got me 2-3 extra claims a day so it is worth it.

Agreed. I have a similar GPS unit and these things are simply AWESOME! Well worth the money. Especially in places like Punta Gorda where all the damn streets signs are gone! haha

BillyD -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/3/2005 9:45:41 AM)

Reqesting assist from someone more tech knowlegable than myself.

Have been susing Earthmate GPS w/ Street Atlas USA 2004 w/Plus Data in the car and office with some success finding my way to the claim sites.

A couple of days agos, after traveling, and stumbling around with the tab keys, attempting to stay on track I lost the color on my map. When, I reopened the program to map a new route, I have no color to my screened map, and I receive a pop up window reading:
Route Find
! (exclamation in yellow triangle),
Find tab did not initialize (ISO error)
... click ok, and receive 2nd pop up...
Route Find
!- Unable to complete search.

I have uninstalled and re-installed both Steet Atlas 2004 w/Plus Data 3 times, but continue to receive the same pop up messages.

Any assistance to correct is appreciated.

Thamks, BillyD

Janice_Toll -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/3/2005 4:58:29 PM)

Billy D,

I received the following e-mail from DeLorme, and had not downloaded the update and got an error message when trying to "Find". I downloaded and it corrected the problem. Should correct yours too.

"In order to assure your DeLorme software continues performing to its
full potential in 2005, we strongly encourage you to update the
Magnetic Declination file included within your application(s) to the
latest 2005 version, just released by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Association (NOAA) on December 16, 2004.

The file size is only about 252kb, so the process should take a short
time. This one download will provide the new file for all DeLorme
software titles you own.

This update will resolve potential "ISO error messages" within your
DeLorme software product(s), so we strongly encourage you to use the
link below and download the latest file at the DeLorme support site.

http://update.delorme.com"

BillyD -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/3/2005 9:11:38 PM)

Janice, thanks for your response. You and your partner stay well. We did meet in Dallas back in 2000.

Downloaded the update. Uninstalled, and reinstalled again. Delorme opens to its standard black/white target map. Enter new route, auto calculate, popup window is now different; simply reads, "The route failed to calculate", click ok, and screen displays black/white map with orange trail from start to finish points; go to print, click direction, all the direction tabs are shaded out, not accessible, gives miles, and hours only.

Have had no serious problems in the past other than my slow, stumbling through the key board, not knowing much ado about what I am doing.

Have lost my 3-d color map. Spent a couple of hours searching the index for a possible solution ... found none that work for me, on my computer.

In an earlier post, you say the 2005 is much improved. Guess, to save time, and to try and advance, I will go to Best Buy, purchase the 2005, and start fresh. My concern now is that I have deleted something in my basic computer program that has caused the problem.

I will advise you the results of my next effort for your edification, and interest.

Working the woods (as the locals refer to it) sandy, single trail roads here in central Florida, the GPS locator has been an assist.
It tells me if I am totally lost on a particular day.

Thanks, BillyD

okclarryd -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/4/2005 7:37:45 AM)

There's nothing quite like knowing that one is totally lost while using the finest and latest portable computing devices and software along with a GPS that reads from no fewer than 6 military and civilian satellites.

Now, how would I know about this??

BillyD -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/4/2005 8:00:49 AM)

Larry, thanks for the support.
Lost, but not totally alone; misery loves company. Regardless of the sometimes lost, and the computer voice sometimes forgetting where it is, I have become accustomed to its' company (nearly companionship); when my thoughts wander to other places than the claim domain, it speaks and tells me to wake up, and turn somewhere down the road, cut through the next pasture, circle the pond, and the green dot (with me in tow) arrives on target.

Off and running the ridges and sandy roads ... "alone again".

Bueno suerte, BillyD

JimF -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/4/2005 8:22:23 AM)

Oh Larry. It can get even worse.

'Lost' is waking up in the morning in a strange bed and not knowing where you are and where you met the woman laying beside you. I don't think even GPS would keep someone from finding their way into this kind of situation.

Now how would anyone know this? (Now understand Larry that I have no personal knowledge of this, but rumors do pass through the grapevine about it happening to other adjusters. Poor guys.)

okclarryd -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/5/2005 7:53:03 AM)

hehehehehehehehe!

LarryW -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/5/2005 8:48:34 AM)

I woke up in a strange bed last week, sad part of this story is that it was my own bed which I hadn't seen in four months.

BillyD -> RE: GPS Hardware & Software (1/15/2005 10:57:44 AM)

Thanks Janice.
Spent the money purchased the 2005, and installed. The new features, and tutor are worth the money.
Perhaps my experience will benefit another who, like me, is not the most internet savy adjuster.

The previous installation to updates had not properly installed due to my not completely closing all programs running in the background. Specifically, Norton Antivirus. I was reluctant to do this, as when installing 2004 Streets, did so, and registered on line not knowing that my antivirus was still disabled, a virus apparently slipped in. Result, two weeks later a computer crash; 6 hours at an Orlando computer shop restoring the system. Took a good tech, with all the equipment to restore, run a complete wash, 5 hrs run time (I had a lot of files working), and recover all my files.

This time, after downloading, the Steets, and update, I disconnected from the internet before disenabling the background Norton antivirus, installed, did not register on line, enabled the Antivirus, and all works ok.

Recently, I still had to cut across a locked gate, and a couple miles of pasture with no road to reach the site in the woods.

Thanks for your recommendation to the 2005. It is worth it.
BillyD
