I am curious to know, how does being an IA affect your plans for that family vacation? Do you find that you don't plan at all and make an impromptu vacation of wherever you last assignment ended? Or do you set the plans and then tell any carrier that you will need 10 days off at a certain point to take that vacation you planned?
As staff, planning a vacation is not any harder really than it is for a normal office employee, and of course, I have all those frequent flier miles and hotel points to pay for it.
What are your tips for planning around summer cat work while still finding time to enjoy the world???

I've found that to take a summer vacation, you have to squeeze it in between the spring storms and July 15th. After that it's a crap shoot that a hurricane may interfere. Three day weekends are usually not a problem. Best bet is January or February, prices are down everywhere and there aren't many tourists out there. Of course, you need to be below the Mason-Dixon line, or Europe. We went to Rome in late January for peanuts.
There have been many a year that I all got was a few three day weekends. Good luck in your plans. |

I am an IA and have been for 7 years. I tell people that the only way I can escape is to really leave. Last year I went to China twice, hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim for 1 week and went to Germany for 1 week. I set my trips up and hope to work around them. So far I've been really lucky, finishing up one storm as I'm leaving, and starting another when I return. I really didn't have any other days off last year.
We have another trip to China planned, leaving on May 28th. That one may be delayed due to SARS. How, if we are able to go, it affects my working on a storm is unknown. But usually, if you have good relationship with the cat vendors they will try to work with you. So I may miss out on something this week but I can work again once I get home.
