Over 100 houses have burned in California (San Bernandino area) and the fires are still going strong. More mandatory evacuations were issued in Rancho Cucamonga. Is anybody coming out to work here? |

There is possiblity of large number of smoke claims throughout southern california. Also heavy ash is falling everywhere. Large new fires in San Diego County. I am in Long Beach, on vacation from Arizona. |

With over 850 houses damaged or destroyed this is pretty much a catastrophe. I am very surprised that the insurance companies are not sending more of you guys, or at least some of you guys, out here. Are your professional services generally used only in storm situations? |

TC, if the carriers sent in 50 adjusters to handle 850 lost or damaged homes, that would be 17 claims per adjuster. The problem with sending in cat adjusters for wildfires is simply "the numbers". 17 claims generally doesn't make a 'cat' worthwhile except perhaps for those close by. But the fires are still out of control so things could change for some of us before it's all over. (And don't forget the smoke damage claims either as well as ALE for forced evacuations). |

Ted, 17 total loss claims would take quite a while to settle and would probably also bill out pretty good. These are pretty nice homes and they are to be rebuilt at CA labor and material rates so each file could bill out between $8000 and $15000 bucks. It wouldn't take many of those to make a good storm for a lone adjuster.
I seriously doubt that the carriers will send anyon in until the situation is under control. The fires are still burning and my friend tried to call someone in San Diego last night and couldn't get through at all. This thing is far from over. |

Kile, you assume each adjuster would get 17 claims. Based on recent trends in the industry, it more likely would be that the vendors and carriers will call in 850 adjusters and/or warm bodies in a rush to close the files as quickly as possible, and each adjuster will get one and perhaps 2 or 3 of these claims. It happened in Isabel. |

Maybe 2 or 3 was all you could handle Teddy?
No responsible carrier is going to bring in an IA and only give him 3 claims and send him home. They know IAs have to earn a living. If you or anyone is experiencing these types of assignments, your vendor is to blame. You work 3 or 300 claims, they still get their cut.

I'm at 155 losses and counting in 5 weeks CD. Is that good enough?
There are a whole lot of adjusters who traveled to the Norfolk area only to get 10, 15, 25 or 35 claims and not a small number who got not one single claim file.
The times they are a'changing and not necessarily for the best. Otherwise I agree with you. |

Kile, you must be thinking these are all mansions burning down there. While San Diego and San Bernadino has its share the majority are regular tract homes. Calif rebuild costs will of course be higher then anywhere else, however the 8k to 15k per job just wont be there.
I am more concerned that we may see another Oakland issue with underinsured's all over the place.
Will see where the I/A's come from, maybe just local folk handling local stuff. Its been pretty barren out here for several years. Similar to your experiences on the east coast.. |

TedP,
Flood claims or roof claims? How widespread of an area did you work? What was the average steep of the roof? What was the ave. square footage of the home? Did you have to measure & diagram the roof if you got on it?
There are numbers and then there are "numbers"
Just wondering

Debby, a friend of a friend lives in San Diego and he told me that the average house there is about $300,000. That is for the house and the land, but it doesn't include the personal property or the ALE. |
