Last week’s snowstorm may be one for the record books in terms of snowfall, but probably not in storm damage, insurers said.

Insurance companies, which were bracing for a flood of damage claims this week, said so far they have seen only a trickle compared with what followed Hurricane Sandy in October, Hurricane Irene in the summer of 2011, and the unusually early snowstorm in October 2011.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement that consumer complaints against Narragansett Bay Insurance Company, Tower Insurance Company and Kingstone Insurance Company received by the state's Department of Financial Services have been "much higher than average."

"More than 270,000 claims have been paid by 24 insurers since Hurricane Sandy damaged and flooded Staten Island and other parts of New York City as well as Long Island and its suburbs last fall, New New York officials report."

"The average time from claims report to inspection ranged from three days for Arch Insurance Group, with 242 commercial claims, to 20 days for State Farm with 55,592 claims, noting its wide array of claims, complexity and damage severity."

A storm system moved through Austin and San Antonio, Texas producing strong winds on the evening of February 25, 2012. These conditions resulted to damage to homes and other property.

Catastrophe adjusters have been deployed to the area to assist with claims and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Brookshire, Texas -

Residents in Brookshire were woken up in the middle of the night because quarter-sized hail was falling.

The nearly 10-minute hail storm moved through about 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, the first day of spring.

Thousands of pieces of hail littered the Meadowood Apartments in the 6000 block of Meadowood Lane. Residents there found damage to their homes and vehicles. Every north-facing window in the complex was hit by the hail.

"HOUSTON -- Severe weather made its way into southeast Texas overnight Tuesday, dropping baseball-sized hail in Galveston County.

In Hitchcock and Santa Fe, hail pounded cars and windows, causing damage at a police station and a mobile home community. Residents told KHOU 11 News some neighbors went out in the rain to try and cover their damaged roofs."

Wind and hail storms remain some of the most frequent and severe causes of property damage. This year the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety Research Center conducted the first-ever indoor hailstorm, in an effort to research building products and ways to educate consumers.

A monster tornado packing winds as strong as 200 mph roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs Monday, pulverizing block after block of homes, wrecking an elementary school and leaving fires burning out of control.

Crews were frantically searching an estimated 30 square miles of wreckage and only beginning to get a sense of the destruction as night fell. Initial reports from NBC affiliate KFOR said at least four people were killed in the suburb of Moore, including a mother and child, and hospitals reported several dozen injured.

Storms rolled through San Antonio Saturday and dumped nearly 10 inches of rain, sparking house fires, flooding roads throughout the city, and stranding people in their vehicles and at parks.

San Antonio firefighters responded to nearly 250 water-related incidents. In one case, Chief Charles Hood said his crews were in the middle of rescuing a 60 year old woman when the strong currents grabbed her away from them.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Insurance claims filed in response to several May tornadoes jumped to 60,308 Tuesday, with insurance payments reaching $470,323,299.

“These numbers are already staggering, and this is just the beginning,” said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. “Many of the victims haven’t received their entire settlement checks yet, so that payment number will continue to go up for a while. This is something the state of Oklahoma is going to be dealing with for a long time. Those affected by the storms need to know that we’re here to help, for as long as it takes.”

More communities in the Canadian province of Alberta have been placed on flood alert as high water levels move downstream from the city of Calgary.

Mark Hanna, spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas, said the North Texas ice storm caused tens of millions of dollars in residential damage alone.

“Claims are still coming in, but throwing out a number that is going to rise, we’re at about $30 million in insured residential losses,” Hanna said Thursday. “That’s carports falling down, trees on houses, broken water pipes.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK is forecasting the development of tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds from the Ozarks region to parts of the Mid-South and lower Ohio Valley this afternoon and tonight. ....

The repair vs replacement debate continues.

"Wirth said a contractor quoted him $32,000 to repair the entire roof. But his insurance company, American Family Insurance, offered $8,000, telling him it would only repair the shingles that were actually damaged."

"They feel that it can be repaired and new shingles can be blended into old, which is entirely wrong," Wirth said.

"Heavy rainfall over the weekend in southeast Saskatchewan has some communities struggling to keep up with the influx of water.

It's led to dangerous travel conditions after some highways were submerged or washed out, and several states of emergency were declared. 

The city of Melville called a state of emergency just before 9 a.m. CST after significant rainfall in the area.

Up to 15 other communities have also declared states of emergency."

"In some parts of northern California, the storm produced sustained, hurricane-force winds of 78 mph and one gust of 147 mph in the Sierra. There were flash flood warnings in several parts of the Bay Area, and part of major highways were closed due to flooding."
