I recently decided to pursue a switch to IA after a background as a State Farm Agent and Financial Advisor. Though a family connection I was accepted at Pilot and I've registered for the State Farm Certification IDL on March 13th.

While Pilot has provided me the following packets: a Training Price List, Estimatics study guide, and Policy. I am at a bit of a loss on how best to prepare myself for the Estimatics portion. I feel as though with my background explaining coverages and some time spent with the policy/coverages packet I can pass the wind/hail portion of the two tests. The Estimatics portion intimadates me as I have never used Xactimate nor begun training with it. What steps can I take to best prepare myself for success on both? Should I purchase a self training course through Xactimate beforehand or will this Estimatics study guide be sufficient to pass that portion? What types of questions are covered on the Estimatics portion.

    Your advice is greatly appreciated!

2 pieces of good news: You can learn Estimatics yourself. You have three weeks left to learn it. Follow the instructions that come with it, everything you need is in there. Estimatics is an organized methodology for finding the repair/replacement cost of a damaged item. It is the paper version of Xactimate. Once you know its structure it will become easy for you to use.

Focus on pages 4 and 5 of the Estimatics study guide. They show you how it's organized and how to use it. Conceptually, finding a price is drilling down from the general (Category code) to the specific (Description). When you get to what you think is the right item in the Description read the Description above your choice and the one below your choice. Pick the one that best fits the question. You do this by reading the question and understanding what it is asking. Then do the simple math and you've answered the question.

    Denco,

Thank you for your response! I've been studying the policy and estamatics guides given to me to prep for the state farm certifications. The estamatics guide seems a little tricker, but am I doing everything in my power to prepare myself to pass? (In other words-These two certifications will only be covering whats in the packets?)

I know this is a little late, as you are done with your training by now. However, I'll post this in hopes of helping anybody else with similar concerns. During your IDL certification, you will learn how to do estimatics. Your class will go over estimating (and there will also be an estimatics packet mailed out to you). You will get plenty of time in advance to study this material before you go to your training class. But be warned, lots of the information in that packet will not make sense to you until you go through your training class. The best advice I could give is "Take a break! Don't spend every waking moment studying this material. You will fry your brains!" Xactimate won't even be covered during the State Farm IDL certification. So don't sweat that part.
