Does anyone have info on software available to convert a digital recording to a text file or document in WORD style document?  I use an Olympus WS-100 digital recorder that has a USB connector that allows for easy transfer of the recording to laptop.  The problem is doing the conversion of the recording to a text document is so time consuming.

I bought Dragon Naturally Speaking and really don't like it. But then again, I have not messed with it much. One easy solution to your problem is to send it to www.wetype4u.com and have them transcribe it for you. Their rates are very reasonable and they will send it back to you in a Word format. Once we get them back we listen to the statement as we read the transcription to make sure it is accurate.
    Hope this helps.

I am on my 3rd version of Dragon Naturally Speaking (version 9.0 with SP1) and it is excellent. You have to work with it to train it properly. The 1st version I got back in around 2001 or so was not good, which makes me wonder why I ended up getting the next version up. @nd go around had lots of improvements and did a pretty decent job, and I'm really sold on this version. Some of the best $ I have ever spent on a computer program and has saved me countless hours of typing, which I hate to do anyway. I also have an Olympus digital recorder with the USB hookup, but haven't tested it with the program yet as I have always been there at the home when doing my notes. I'll test it out this weekend and let you know how it comes out.

Steve Beaumont, how did your scope notes send to your hard drive with the USB come out.  I have an Olympus WS-100 and have to summerize a lot of recorded statements on liability claims for the carrier. Cost is a big item and I am thinking about playing the statement back, resume the main topic(s) and burning a CD to keep or send to the carrier. Any adjusters doing regular work for low wages please chirp up, also.

    Ray,

Sorry I am just getting this note and responding to you. My test that I mentioned I was going to do didn't take place as planned due to too much work hitting as I was trying to get caught up for some time off. My Olympus is a DS-2 and if memory serves me correctly your model also was compatible with the Dragon program when I looked at them. I will leave the recorder and software on my desk here and hopefully when I get a free moment this week I'll do the testing of it and let you know.

Well I got a chance to play with the recorder, Dragon Software and the usb adapted stand that came with my recorder and I liked the way it worked. Keep in mind that this Dragon software isn't perfect, and when you dictate direct into the computer, there are always some corrections that need to be made when you proof read your work. It depends on how well the software is "trained" to your voice originally, the words used (various types of words like legal or medical terms may need to be trained in unless you buy the one designed for legal or medical), how long you have been using the program (it learns new words as you use them, or train them into the program), and how fast you are dictating into it. When I used my digital recorder, once I was ready to transcribe it, I just placed the unit into the stand and it automatically opened up the program. A couple clicks of some keys on the puter, and it automically downloaded the dictation onto the computer into a WAV or MMA type file (like songs etc are on your puter). I then open up Dragon, hit a couple keys and it transcribes the file that I downloaded. There are a couple things I am still working on to streamline the process, and the main one is if I can transcribe it direct into the file I want it to go into vs the wordpad or whatever it is in the Dragon program (that would save a step of having to cut and paste it into the claim file).
One needs to remember everything you originally dictated into the recorder when you go back to transcribe it and proof read it, because you will almost always have a few words to correct and you need to remember what they were. Generally you can read it and make sense of what it was supposed to be. The longer the time between the dictation and the transcribing it may make corrections a little more difficult.
I used to dictate all my file notes while driving from one inspection to the next and my wife would transcribe them into the file when I returned in the evening, but then after she started traveling with me on all the claims, she just did the typing of the info direct into the puter between the inspections. With the current assignment I am working in an office (carrier won't allow me to put Dragon on the work computer) and I have an incredible amount of notes, reports, memos, etc that I have to do on the files, and I hate to type. I used to bring dummy files home to do the notes into them, but now I can dictate the info at the office, download it at home on the puter/transcribe it, and dump into the original file the next day at the office. For me personally, it will end up saving probably 5-10 hrs a week at least this way and that time can be spent being more productive on other work tasks. I for one am sold on it, but you have to be patient and work thru the bugs and get the program trained properly.

You can use transcription software as well as services. But services are much better than the software as these services are more accurate, easy to use, and hassle free. You can try this one - www.speechtotextservice.com.

I used foxtranscribe once and they were great. They've now changed to rev.com; charge is $1/minute for a 98% accurate word for word transcription.
