    You take laptops into some relatively hostile environments, and I work off multiple machines.
    I'm looking for options that go beyond just backups, I want to be able to give a client access to their "folder" on a read-only basis (maybe allow them to save documents into the folder).

    This would address some issues I have with large drawings and other large files that are a pain to e-mail.

    Have you looked at any internet hosting services that would allow you to save/retrieve/control access to documents?

    Thanks.

    We have a system here on CADO that we tested about year ago for the Gold Membership, does provide features that you listed. It provides private folders, allows you control the access and also allows to you share access at document level and via links and some other features. At the time we did not have much interest but can add it back.

    Please add it back and to quote me a price for using it. Also, any instruction regarding use a back up would be appreciated.

     Chuck, I brought it back online and  it's located on the "Downloads" page.

    You can follow this link to try it out.  If you login you will see a folder titled "Members" click the plus sign to expand the tree and you will see your folder.  This is a private folder that allows you manage your files online.  It's not a backup service it just a place that allows you store and manage your documents. (with some space limits)

    It works just like Windows, you can right click on the folder to see the options, use the "New Item" option to upload a file. It uses a Wizard to help with the upload.  You can create additional folders under your folder.

    The Public folder is for uploading files to share with the community.

    As I stated above it's not a backup system but is a Document Management system.
    The private folders provide advanced security, files are obfuscated and stored in a way that makes it impossible for them to be downloaded directly.

     Here is a link to the page;

    Here are some of the features of the document management app here on CADO.

    • Store your files in a folder structure, just as you would when using your trusted Windows Explorer. Any document belongs to exactly one folder.
    • Organize your files using categories. Any document can belong to multiple categories.
    • Versioning of documents
    • Advanced security to prevent unauthorized direct access
    • Share documents from your private folder by providing a link to the document, the link would only provide access to the file not the folder.
    • more to come

    But if you are looking for a online backup system, http://mozy.com">mozy.com might be worth a try.

    quote from their site;

    "Get https://mozy.com/registration/free">2 GB of 100% free backup space to back up photos, music, and documents, on your home computer. No credit cards, no monthly payments or fees, and no expiration."
