Hi, I am currently a Public Insurance Adjuster with the state of Florida.  I am not too happy with my current standing as a PA, and have been contemplating for over a year now becoming an Independent Adjuster.  I really believe this would be a better fit for me.  However, after working on claims for 3 years as a PA, I am really not sure how to make that leap.  I know that I have to inform the state that I would like to transfer my license, and that I already have the training, classes, etc, but I am not sure how to market myself as an Independent.  I was told I could self-appoint and then do contract services for different adjusting firms.  Is this the norm, or would I be better off getting hired on by one of the firms?  Are firms hiring now?  Most importantly, would I even get any work or  be hired (contractor or regular employee) seeing as how I would be a "former Public Adjuster" ?    What are firms' opinion's of former Public Adjusters?

I would really appreciate any input I could get here.  Thanks so much!

Work always goes from lean to heavy and back to lean in the catastrophe business. You have to be able to weather the lean or move on to another line of work. If you are an experienced and good PA, you should probably remain there just as a good IA should probably remain where he is. Insurance companies and IA companies generally shy away from cross adjusters.
