As everyone knows, this business isn't for the faint hearted when it comes to predicability. Given the many ups & downs, if you had an option to go into another profession instead of adjusting, knowing what you know now, would you opt out of the adjusting "experience"?Why?

I needed a job after college, & adjusting was the first job offer that was "white collar' and more appropriate for use of a college degree than working in a cafeteria. I worked for a number of years & decided it was a tough field.By the time I figured out it was not the most gratifying of professions, I had gotten into the financial trap of having to pay bills out of everyday living. Now that I have been in it for awhile, it is not so easy to switch careers.Once I had figured out that this is likely my destiny, I decided to make the best of it & figured I might as well be the best I can. So in short order, I would likely have looked to switch careers earlier on in my adjusting years.I am not trying to bash the industry, just tell my opinion in the hopes other will share theirs.I know 1st hand how rough it is & pray I can last as long as some of the "old timers". They really deserve a ton of credit.Peace Out !

Gordon, knowing what I know, and doing what I have done in my life there has been and will be many trials and tribulations, as in most lives. Specifically speaking of the "ADJUSTING BUSINESS" It has over the years lead me on a path of other business's, Never at any time did I choose to "OPT OUT" It has been apart of my life, and remains my life.

I truly believe whatever is in your heart, you will stay with. And if it ever becomes something other than that, it is time to resolve to another part of the Industry, or "OPT OUT" as you so put it. There are many things and Business that is a spin off from the Adjusting business, and Opting out, is actually exploring other parts of the Business. Specializing in a particular type of claim for instance, Or Venturing into a sector that spins off of the adjusting business.

I would say "Follow Your Heart" The Money Will Come if you are creative enough to think out of the Box.

My 2 Cents!

Gordon,
You remind me of one of my favorite expressions. "I have been in this business for 34 years and have spent the last 33 trying to figure out how to get out of it.

Regarless of what I now know about insurance adjusting, I think I would still prefer to be the lead singer of Van Halen.

gordon1, by all means spun off Contracting business specializing in commercial & large loss refurbishment, private investigator needed to investigate specificly adjust and investigate theft and fraud claims, Salvage and Purchase construction, mining, process, oilfield, and petrochemical equipment, And purchase and refurbishment of large loss property. And a few other things.

ALL of which were spun off from Adjusting Claims. And can only say to you, IF ITS IN YOUR HEART, and you have a great deal of desire in your heart.......... YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I have never regretted closing my agency and going into claims. It has had its trials at some times, but I have have enjoyed it, and plan to be here or years to come.
