With the sad, sad state of affairs within NFIP and FEMA, we may tend to overlook some of those that are truly suffering.

This gleaned from a National Publication tonight, gives one pause..

I received an e-mail yesterday from a very good friend of mine who just got back from New Orleans. She lives in Washington State and flew out there to volunteer her time to do something, anything. She called me from Utah on her return home and I could tell that this trip had changed her tremendously. I could feel it in her exhausted yet exuberant voice. With her permission granted, I wanted to share this e-mail in the hopes that it might make someone else feel as I had when I read it.

"I am actually left speechless. I don't think any pictures or words can describe the situation in New Orleans. I went on a disaster relief team that was working with the Salvation Army, The Southern Baptist convention and we were supporting FEMA. The only other source of help these people have is from the Red Cross. We made over 7,000 meals a day and served them to the relief workers and the few people who were sticking around trying to salvage what they had left. Most of the homes were completely destroyed and the ones standing are full of toxic mold that will not go away. The people who refuse to leave (because they have no where else to go) are trying to clean there homes with bleach, but as soon as they get one spot clean the mold is back, even if they stay they will die with in the next few years from the exposure.

We had to talk a lot of people out of suicide; they have absolutely no hope. We didn't talk everyone out of it as people are still committing suicide daily. There is no food, no water and no electricity in the entire city. This was a very humbling experience for me as I got to see just how blessed I am. I have family and I know where they are, I have a house and all my kids are here and alive. This will be a very Thanksgiving for me and I hope that you all can see just how lucky each and every one of you are.

Have a wonderful holiday and say a prayer for those less fortunate than you.

Jackie"

Yeah, Gale.  Good story.

The last line kinda tells it all.

My two bits worth is that I am handling flood and wind claims all over the South Louisana area, my personal experience is that New Orleans people are the very best. Very nice, very polite, very understanding and accepting of the situation. I stop and ask directions of people who are cleaning out their remaining possesions and they are great.

I second that.  Everyone I spoke with was so reasonable and so helpful.  I know there are some out there that are a challenge, but I am very thankful that nothing like this has happened in MA.  I couldn't imagine the attitudes.  The wind and rain storms which resulted in flooding, etc throughout the New England states over the last few months would make you think that they had experienced Katrina level damages.

The state of Lousiana has made it so punitive to be involved in a mold loss that it is almost impossible to have the authority to test it, clean it or deal with it in any fashion that there will be a very  limited number of qualifed folks.  That will in turn increase the cost and delay in legally getting a property cleaned up.

I think that was one of problems in Texas any cleaning company could take a 3 day course
get certified. And then hire a lab to do the test. With no firm guidelines other than the NY.
ones which I heard where stretched every way they could. Got my thought

The E.P.A. does not list bleach as an effective biocide for molds. I other words it does not work. Any area treated with a bleach solution will clean only the surface mold but will not kill the mold that is growing below the surface. Naturally it will return.

Nothing statistical, just empirical observation: handling some Charlie condo association claims, I inspected several interiors where the unit owners had no insurance. Most of these folks got very aggressive in taking care of their property and scrubbed religiously with soap, bleach. I'd say it was a success. On later re-inspections with PAs and contractors, most of these units were problem free, compared to their 'fully insured' neighbors who waited for someone to take care of them. Most of those interior units were a nightmare.

Kilo,

You're right ....... and wrong.  Bleach mixed with water will soak into or penetrate wood and attack the mold roots.  Bleach without being mixed with water doesn't do much even in the laundry. Or on hard surfaces.

OSHA or FEMA reports being what they are, as with any government report, should be taken with a "grain of salt".  Or, several grains of salt, a little lime, and a shooter.

I know this:  a 50/50 mixture of Clorox and water from the tap cleans the hell outa mold and mildew.  And it stays clean.

Since the wind usually blows outa the south and southwest, I know it's not the air that does it.  It might be the high concentration of very active churches in the region.  Clean living and all that.

I don't know much about ionic characteristics of fluids or high colonic treatments.  And I hope I don't have to learn about them either.

Mold is really nasty. Just look how it got into this up-beat Forum Thread and polluted it.

:) it's amazing what will go away, once you start laughing.

Big Bob and RobertV-

Thanks for pointing out the original point of the thread. I live here. Luckily I'm not in a FEMA trailer, in which the oven doesn't accomodate a Thanksgiving turkey. I had 30 for dinner. What does that have to do with bleach? Most people here are hardy and good to those actually trying to help. Adjusters should appreciate that the next time they're lost in the Lower 9th Ward and someone is kind enough to give directions. We all spend our time looking at policy and computer screens. Don't forget why you're working in the first place. Something was classified a catastrophe. In case some of you forgot what a catastrophe is,

  • Main Entry: ca·tas·tro·phe
  • Pronunciation: k&-'tas-tr&-(")fe
  • Function: noun
  • Etymology: Greek katastrophe, from katastrephein to overturn, from kata- + strephein to turn
  • 1 : the final event of the dramatic action especially of a tragedy
2 : a momentous tragic event ranging from extreme misfortune to utter overthrow or ruin
3 a : a violent and sudden change in a feature of the earth b : a violent usually destructive natural event (as a supernova)
  • 4 : utter failure : FIASCO

Thank you Gale for bringing this story to us.
