Vendors often require a clear photo of a pitch gage, showing rise in inches per foot. I've been using a protractor and 12" ruler, but find it difficult to hold in place and still get a good photo. I've looked around for a pitch gage as some adjusters have mentioned, but can't seem to find one that can be set on the roof on its own, where I can step back and get a good photo.
Can anyone direct me to a supplier that sells a quality pitch gage, or tell me what/ how do you handle this task?

...checked there but didn't see anything actually called a pitch gage. Could you elaborate? What is the product named? Look like? photo or any info would help.

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Thanks guys, looks like Home depot doesn't carry these any more, at least not where I live, or online. The photo helped as it has the name "Johnson pitch and angle locator". Found it on Amazon.com for $7.14. Johnson also has a magnetic versoin of the same gauge, for around $10. I bought 1 of each.
That was incredibly fast results. Thanks CADO!

I have never been asked for that. Just out of curiosity....how many of you have been asked for a photo of the pitch gage?
Seems to me that a roof is not steep, steep, or vertical. Now before anyone starts to tell me I'm wrong....I am only applying to estimates.
Simsol has one steep charge
X-hole has 3 steep charges 7/12-9/12 10/12-12/12, and over 12/12
Just my thoughts.

One of the vendors I work with , require it on all claims, cat & day. We also use a shingle gauge. What's so
great about that ? When you get that roofing invoice 2 months later with 40 year shingles, just pull up the original
photo with the gauge on the 30 year shingle. Kills alot BS quick.

I have never been asked to provide a photo with the gauge. I do take one for my own benefit just in case it comes up at a later time or if the file examiner questions a steep charge. It only came up twice in about 200 claims for the good hands folks.

Thats called progress I guess, but have never used either in over 20,000 roofs over 46 years. I might also be a little faith and trust is in the mix.

Ronnie, I had a claim in Miami, I had closed about 2 months prior. An invoice from a roofer made it's way
to me through the proper channels. The square count was the same. I pulled my photo up and called the roofer.
He explained that the insurance estimate had 30 year laminate shingles, but the house had 40 year laminate shingles.
I then explained that I had pulled up a roof photo of the loss, that the Haag shingle gauge shows it
as a 30 year. You could have heard a pin drop. Needless to that ended that.

Some insurance carriers require a pitch gauge, photo, before they will allow a steep charge and those same carriers pay may have a built in up charge to their fee when its steep so having one available for this and all of the previous posts is a good idea. Anything to justify our payment to us and anything that can even prevent one reinspection is well worth it.

Well I will back down a bit as this will keep files from reopening. The roof diagram, photos and the two gage's test should stop the calls. However we need some drops to test the age like the salt water fresh water test.
Some old hail adjusters that can get you within a year with good distance and close up digital photos of shingles, if they know state local they are from.
