I'm a roofing installer but have not been to this site since there was snow on the ground here in MN. Been really busy this year since the first of January.

Do moslty new roofs but some tear offs due to age, weather damage or shingle defects. Licesensed, bonded insured for a million, all the fun stuff!!!

I still get the hots for hail storms but sold my roofing company in June 04. I have been involved with roofing since 1971. Dad was a storm chaser. Every summer I visited was a different city...Joplin, Plainview, San Antonio, Ft Worth, Tulsa, Witchita Falls (79), etc. etc. I made the move to adjuster in Aug. 05 and my wife won't let me call myself a roofer anymore.
How come none of you guys want to mop up the thousands of roof repairs in LA?
I've never heard of so much debris under sealed tabs and "loose shigles" in my life. Guess all you guys want are re-roofs.
I love meeting with roofers on re-inspections and acting like I know nothing. Then dropping the hammer.
I'm from the Dallas area and we have not had a good storm here since 03. I guess it was a good move on my part.

La is now paying La prices since all the Texans are there.  Nobody wants to do a job for $90 a square.  They can have it.  Lots to mop up, but too many headaches.  If somebody hasn't decided on a contractor by now, there is something wrong.

I was a salesman for years when i befriended an adjuster years ago.  He showed me that i could make an equivalent wage with less headaches -- the door to door roofing sales game seems to get harder and harder as each year wears on.
I was out of work and did not get picked for a hail assignment so i joined an old friend's roofing company in Wichita 3 or 4 weeks ago to try to pi ck up some pocket money as a salesman.     NEVER AGAIN
I have seen several contractors go from  "struggling roofer" to having more money than they know what to do with in the wake of the last several years of hurricanes though, so i am still very interested in my own company someday, but someone else will do the bulk of the door to door work if that time ever comes.

Ass Kicker-
That's me. Being a past owner I know the money is crazy in good times. But the slow times ****. New home builders let you make about $200 per home and the service calls seem to come in around 10pm Saturday night. The deductibles are so high, I was losing work to roofers doing the work for "whatever you get from the insurance company". Not worth the hassle. Besides, liability was costing me 60k/year and they drop you if you claim anything.
I am curious about chasing though. I've heard about this scenerio and it sounds interesting....Go to storm area, get local phone number and address, change license plates, pay established roofing company for tagging along on their license, hire 20 - 30 salesmen, give them door to door quads of the city, put in escrow account a percentage of the profits to be released when the 2 year warranty runs out to make established company have a fuzzy feeling, hire a roof inspector to inspect every roof before you pay the roofer, work it for 6 months to 1 year, do 500 roofs at 3000 profit each, collect the escrow in 2 years after service calls taken out. Do it again. You'd be a kazillionaire!. Let me know how it works.

You are real close to what i have seen done --- however, most guys i know in a hurricane area use their own company name.  The Florida contractor license i have heard is difficult to get.  Many states(counties, cities, etc.) will give a 6 month storm license if proof of a FL license is shown.
Demand is so high that out of state tags don't seem to be much of a deterrent as long as a local license is obtained,  but availability of shingles is poor, among  other things.   Most guys rent a small yard or a large warehouse to store shingles and a truck so they can load jobs themselves rather than depending on local suppliers and they truck shingles in from their home state or the closest convenient place.
Add in costs to support a small sales staff for the first month, plus the premium that a skilled , insured crew(s)  charges and it gets expensive, but the payoff can be high too.
The risks are high and just getting started would eat up what most adjusters earn in a good year, but they say its hard to build true wealth working for someone else too.

Guess Ill step up to the plate. Im the manager of a Roofing Company and yes we travel to Hail storms. We are now license in 7 States inculding Florida. We dont pull the old change tags on trucks and so on. We tell all our customers our home office is in Arlington Tx. Its not a bad way to make a living long as your honest and like to travel you can stay busy year round.I was a adjuster for 7 years like this end better. I also like to get a re-inspection and get a green adjuster. I guess it works both ways. For as pricing its hard to compete with a roofer that works out of his home. With no insurance or Liscense. Then wonts to give everyone there Detuctiable.Workmans Comp is a killer. Then make phony invoices to help the home owner more money. I wish Insurance companys would press more to people that the claim is for there home not pocket money. Then explain to them it is Illegal for them to profit off there Ins. money.

                                                                   Jim

P.S. Always looking for good honest and experence salesman.  $ 100,000.00  is not unreal for a good salesman
