Dry air in the tropical Atlantic may limit development of Canes in the near term

“While all of the primary drivers are strongly enabling for tropical activity, we have had a slow start relative to other very active seasons,” said Todd Crawford, WSI’s chief meteorologist, in a statement. “A pocket of very dry air in the tropical Atlantic will likely limit development in the near term.” "The water vapor image shows an unusual amount of relatively dry air for this time of year in the Atlantic basin. The tropical wave approaching Trinidad and Tobago is basically surrounded by the dry air and the slightly more organized wave west of the Cape Verde Islands is moving into a drier environment, as well. The large area of dry air should inhibit tropical development over a large portion of the basin for the next few days, at least."

Dam fails in eastern Iowa, causing massive flooding

(CNN) -- A dam on an eastern Iowa lake suffered a "catastrophic" failure Saturday, sending a massive amount of water into nearby communities and forcing residents to flee, officials said.
The Lake Delhi dam, about 45 miles north of Cedar Rapids, failed as a result of "massive rain -- a very unusually high amount this season," according to Jim Flansburg, communications director for Gov. Chet Culver.
Culver told CNN that nearly 10 inches of rain had recently fallen in a 12-hour period in the area and was "too much water for the dam to hold."
The roads on either side of the dam -- which were part of the dam's containment measures -- apparently gave out as a result of the rainfall, Flansburg told CNN.

According to Brad Daws, a Bozeman agent, there have been at least 5,000 automobile claims received from State Farm customers. He estimated that State Farm maintains about 30 percent of the auto insurance market in the Gallatin Valley. "They're still coming in," he said, referring to claims related to the June 30 storm, which dropped golf-ball sized hail on vehicles and broke windows in and around Bozeman. "It's kind of a moving target." Source: The Bozeman Daily Chronicle

ATLANTA, July 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- KMC On Demand, a leading online provider of continuing education (CE) credits for insurance claims adjusters, and a key insurance industry advisory committee are launching the pilot of a Property Technical Certification (PTC) program designed to fill a gap in validation of expertise among property claims adjusters. "The PTC program provides a performance standard for the development of property technical claims adjusters," said Colm Keenan, vice president of knowledge management for KMC On Demand. "The auto claims industry has been standardized for a number of years, and this program will bring the property claims industry up to speed. It's about knowing that the adjuster who is walking onto the scene of a property loss or catastrophic situation has the knowledge to estimate damages as accurately as possible. PTC provides a standard measure that will be recognized by insureds, employers and the industry." Source: PR Newswire

AccuWeather.com meteorologists are still monitoring the potential for a tropical system to enter the Gulf of Mexico late this weekend or early next week and potentially affect the oil spill area thereafter.Since the system has not yet formed, there is still quite a bit of uncertainty in its potential strength and track. The feature of interest is a broad area of showers and thunderstorms currently located near Jamaica. This area of showers and thunderstorms was still disorganized Thursday morning with no sign of a well-defined low-level circulation, which is needed for development.

BP Claims

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill could be big business for one Atlanta company, and possibly hurt others. The winner could be Crawford & Co., the world’s largest independent provider of claims management services. On June 16, BP Plc and the White House agreed to establish a $20 billion independently administered fund to pay claims from the Gulf oil spill. “In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must, and will, be administered by an independent third party,” President Barack Obama said in his June 15 national address. A spokeswoman for Crawford (NYSE: CRDA) would not say if the company might bid for any management or processing contracts that could come available. And she would neither confirm nor deny BP is a client. BP said June 16 that more details about the establishment and operation of the claims fund and an independent claims facility will be finalized and announced as soon as possible. The first major Colorado hail and wind storm of 2010 carries an estimated insurance price tag of $70 million resulting from approximately 13,600 auto and homeowners insurance claims filed since baseball-sized hail and high winds caused widespread damage to vehicles and homes around Brighton, Commerce City and other communities in the northeast metro area, as well as some damage in Pueblo. This is a preliminary estimate that may change as people continue to file claims. (photo from the Gallery)
