I'd love to see an essential inventory list before I leave.

I won't guarantee that this list is complete, but from memory this is what we usually packed in the van when we left for an assignment.

laptop
printer
extra ink cartridges
12' ladder
22' ladder
at least two tape measures
100' tape measure
Laser measuring device
winter clothes and summer clothes (might be there more than 6 months)
at least two reams of paper to get started
legal pads
writing instruments
Big bucket of sidewalk chalk
Digital Camera
Backup digital camera for when I drop the first one off the roof
pocket electrical tester
shingle guage
National Construction Estimator (fairly recent edition)
Bag O' Software (for when the computer crashes and you have to reload everything)
Surge Protectors (At least two)
Spouse
GPS
Handy State Farm Contents Depreciation Guide
Road Atlas
Roof Climbing Shoes (Cougar Paws if you got em or felt bottom wading shoes from the sporting goods dept at Walmart if ya don't)
Bungee cords for strapping the ladder to the gutter to keep it from falling
ping pong balls for sliding the tape measure up a roof that's too steep to climb

I'm sure I'm forgetting lots. I kept a lot of this stuff in stackable plastic filing drawers and never unpacked them at home so they were ready to go at all times.

Maybe a few other office materials such as. Stapler/staples, Hanging files, manilla folders, labels, paperclips, post it notes. i take a dry erase board for easy jotting down of something I really want to remember.

A small 1st aid kit, at the least a dust mask. antieptic and bandaids. Any meds you may be on think about a couple month supply.

Cooler with water. and maybe your lunch. you may get hungry.

A good attitude and possitive thinking

Bail bond money for when you've been charged with B&E after taking down the plywood over the door/window to gain access.

I prefer a wind up flashlight and a wind up radio to eliminate the need for all the batteries.

Also, a battery charger which recharges both AA and AAA batteries to keep the camera functioning.

A vehicle electrical adapter to run some of the equipment off the car battery, recharge the laptop, etc., in case the electricity is out.

And...of course, a Roy Cupps CADO truckers style hat and extra CADO polo shirts.

I had a home office manager mention to me one requirement that I should take on storm duty back when I was single was a box of raincoats (as in Trojan brand). That advice paid off well....

And the obvious, a Uhaul to carry every thing mention, and yet to be mentioned before this thread dies.

Steve,

What did you do with all those raincoats? Pass them out to the vendors and carriers before you bent over and grabbed your ankles?

Steve, thanks for that information. I did not realize that Trojan made a rain coat. We never learn enough, do we!

Well, all you folks wanted a big one and right now it looks like you are going to get one. If it were to hit the Houston/Galveston area, there will be work there for over a year. I worked hurricane Alecia for 21 months. Many, many claims from Galveston, through Houston. Get ready now!

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

I can't believe that y'all forgot them big ol' black galoshes, with the metal buckles.

I've been wearing them to the call center this past week and the supervisors give me funny looks but leave me alone.

Whatever works, right?

The 5-buckles are wonderful for good tight comfort & treading thru that "sucking" type of terrain so you don't step out of them.  But looks like something a little higher up the leg might be needed...like hip waders.  Check out Cabela's, Bass Pro, or your duck hunting brother-in-law if you're in a hurry.  You can send him a few bucks later to buy himself an even better pair.
