(today, friday AM) mailboxes and street signs ALREADY overtopped.... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hotstories/5997512.html Question for everybody: with all the preparation people do before evacuating, have you EVER had an insured that took detailed photos of their property right before they left? Ever? I think many properties will be slab only... |

"Good sports" ??? Ray, when did the Astros move out of Houston???? Did I miss something? As for good food/restaurants Houston has the best. Anything related to Pappas (Pappadeaux, Papasittos, Pappa's BBQ) are great, but their steak house is overpriced for what you get. Want an excellent steak thile there, the best is The Taste of Texas near the Beltway 8 and I-10 on the west side. Spent thousands of $$ there, and have the lbs on the waist to prove it. |

To make a long story short: This is a very sizable event. There will be thousands of wind and flood claims. It will be hard to maneuver in some areas of Houston and Galveston will not be open to the public for weeks. I have been answering the phone all day and e-mails to go, which, unfortunately I cannot right now. If I do go, I will wait for a while, as after working Alecia in 1982, I know the problems that arise in that area. TWIA is paying $500.00 for stand by duty right now, but you must commit completely to TWIA. Reggie is a king to work for and takes care of his people, so consider that. Cunningham Lindsey will have a large book of business also, so give them a call. Go with a vendor with a good schedule and stick by your guns and you will make a decent wage. Good luck to all of you. |

It appears from initial damage reports that there is close to 80 billion of damage. If this is the case everyone should be busy for a while. Keep safe. |

I have no doubt that the dollar amount of damage, and the number of claims will exceed Katrina's figures. You are correct in that it will keep plenty of people as busy as they want to be for quite awhile. |

I am native to the Houston area. I lived in the area for 15 years. If anybody needs a scoping assistant i am looking to deploy there. i have worked as a catastrophe contractor/estimator for several years and have written over 100 claims on Xactimate25. I know the area very well, and i know what is and isnt storm damage. I am comfortable with bad living conditions, and long working hours. PM me for more information if you are interested. |

It looks like the PPG glass salesman for the Houston area is going to be in for a mighty fine Christmas bonus this year. |

The "blue tarp" guy will beat us all, I think.
There's already some ads on Craigslist looking for "blue tarp" crews.
If a guy (or girl) keeps his head on and does what he does well, there's lots of stuff to do that would keep the lights on for a while |

I knew a couple guys that did the "blue tarp" work direct for FEMA in Katrina, and you would all be highly offended on how much your government paid to blue tarp these roofs. Probably 3-4 times the value of the job (what a normal cost would be if done by a roofer) and on top of that, FEMA provided the tarps. When I heard what they were paying it brought the memory of the $20,000 toilets and the $10,000 hammers the government buys. |

FEMA provides the tarps, the nail, the wood strips and, if you ask nicely, one o' them $10,000 hammers.
I met a former IA in Florida that wanted me to quit on the spot and go with him to do some tarps. He showed me the tickets and what was being paid and he simply could not keep up. He had two guys that he picked up every morning, they went and got the list and supplies and they tarped all day. He bought the guys a light lunch and some cokes and paid them $100 ea per day.
He showed me that he was making $2,000/$2,500 every day. He had to pay for his gas and the wages and lunches. The rest was his.
Why are we adjusting claims???????
I shoulda got his phone number as I would bet he's already in Houston.

I bet you and I know the same person Larry, as the person I am thinking of knows you I think, used to be an IA and about 14-16 months ago became a PA. Sound familiar? |

When I heard what they were paying it brought the memory of the $20,000 toilets As I recall that was just for the toilet seats. I would hate to see what the cost of the whole toilet was. |
