Has there been any forecast for 2008 yet? I bet after the last two years they pull in their horns for 2008.

This just in over the CNN wire.......

MIAMI, FLA OCT 25 2007 (CNN)----- Authorities were called today when a group of angry storm adjusters attacked a singing group known as the "Fat Ladies". The "Fat Ladies" had gathered on the beach to give an impromptu concert to signal the end of another hurricane season. A Spokeswoman for the group said the attack was a complete surprise. In the past the Fat Ladies were welcomed by the adjusters because it was a sign they would soon be able to go home. CNN attempted to reach a member of the adjusters group, but they had no official comment at this time. An anonymous adjuster who asked that his name be withheld said " we really have nothing against the Fat Ladies, we just feel had no right call an end to the season before the actual end of the year." Florida Governor Charlie Crisp issued a statement saying "I do not feel the need to call the National Guard at this time, but troops have been put on standby in case the violence escalates". At present no charges have been filed against the adjusters, local authorities say they will wait for psychological evaluations on the adjusters before filing formal charges.........

Let's not start talking about the 2008 season just yet. We have 90L out there that might make a run for it!

I'm going to get two smoke bombs and hold one in either hand while turning counterclockwise and chanting on a map of Florida.

That should do the trick.

If I spend the extra money and get the really big ones that allow me to twirl for 5 minutes or so it should mean we end up with a CAT 4 or better.

I sent a post saying I would do the same 2-3 times a day since I live down in the area...

Thanks Stephanie...but no I'm not smoking those kind! Just trying to make work come.

While I realize that there are a good many adjusters who are eager for work, I would like to point out that its in poor taste to eagerly talk about catastrophes and disasters as if they have no effect on anyone.  While it is how cat adjusters earn their living its just plain bad taste to eagerly hope for and joke about devastation.  Try to remember that there are people on the other side of the disaster, and believe me, its their lives, which is far more important than any amount of money that can be made.  Needing to earn a living is one thing, publicly salivating over a potential storm is quite another.

Please try to remember that in order to be employed doing catastrophe adjusting that numerous people are probably devastated due to the loss and destruction that has completely changed their lives.  Please don't give the industry black eye by showing a callous and insensitive nature by pretending that people's lives aren't devastated by catastrophes.  Tact, grace and compassion are much better emotions to show than greed, insensitivity and callousness.

I sure wouldn't want to be an insured who'd read some callous remarks that my adjuster made on a public website.

Thanks for the reminder, you are absolutely correct. The other night I was on the phone with my mom and she asked if any work came in, so I told her listen ma you have a direct line upstairs, the MAN listens to you so pray for a couple of little storms. She told me honey I can't pray for harm to come to others but I will ask that God provide for you and reward your efforts. I think sometimes in our desire and need for income we forget that there is another side to the equation. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

Jeff Masters in his blog yesterday stated:

"The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30, but unofficially, it is probably over. While ocean temperatures are still plenty warm to support tropical cyclone formation in the Caribbean and the Bahamas, wind shear has become prohibitive across the entire tropical Atlantic, and is forecast to remain so until early December."

Though I certainly did not wish for this BUST to occur, I was (and AM) a realist.  I have heard the "fat lady" sing, and this year she sang Out Loud.  This year was a total BUST, wind and hail, and even daily work.  So, back to the original purpose of this post:

How many of you are 'hanging up your tape measures'?  How many plan to stick it out?  AND, What now happens to the fee schedules in our business, in this new era of "too many adjusters/not enough claims"?

Many companies 'hedged' their bets in the past two years, adding 'staff' adjusters, (which they did not use).  Will they keep these new staffers, or will they do the mass layoff to offset their lack of use in the past year?

So many questions...

No intention to hurt any feelings, and I certainly would much rather have been wrong and have us all working, than to be right and have so many unemployed adjusters out their.

Best wishes to all for 2008.

Well, I took a staff job. The carrier I am working for said they are trying to avoid using independants at all. They now have a new program to train staff adjusters that work in other departments for cat deployment. They also have a large cat department. I haven't heard any rumors of lay offs at the company I am working for.

It's an interesting time indeed. I'm finding that many of the IA firms are at the mercy of the insurance carriers, i.e fee bills are being arbitrarily lowered, fee schedules are being changed and staff people are picking up a lot of the field slack. The companies aren't short of work, but there is indeed an overabundance of independents looking for work. I've been pretty lucky and still have quite a few claims from Katrina to handle in addition to normal daily claims.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; this is a small industry. I run into people all the time that I worked with many years ago. It's important to maintain close relationships and constantly network. I saw many adjusters busting bridge after bridge the past few years thinking that the riches were never-ending. For those good adjusters out there looking for work, I say hang in there just a little while longer, things are starting to loosen up. This is a cyclical industry.

It's funny, earlier today before reading your post I was telling myself how you have to USE it or LOSE it.

I'm back doing daily claims, and for the past 10 months over 1/2 of my work was General Liability and Commercial Property, because the other guy didn't want those claims.  Then he quit - and I have been buried in homeowner losses on top of the other stuff.  Fires, pipe leaks, the usual stuff.

I have been using Xactimate since 1993, did my first hurricane in 1992 - and couldn't believe how rusty I became.  Doing stairs with a middle landing busted my balls.  I was back at the help screen, reviewing how to make separate room for each stair run, then the landing a separate room, take out the missing wall between...  doing the rise and run of carpet etc.

I had been using Sketch since the first windows version came out in 1997, yet it was like starting all over again.  Now I am up and running, and it came back to me.  But if you don't USE it, you will LOSE it.

Even if you get paid 1/5 what you are worth, we need to keep our skills sharp.  And learn something everyday, nobody knows it all.

Bob,

I couldn't agree more. I've moved around from company to company, to contractor to staff adjuster back to IA, etc, etc this past year. At least I'm still able to use Xactimate on the little storm I'm on right now.

I've learned that I'm not nearly as employable as I was just a couple of years ago. I've learned that I need to just "go do it" and quit looking for the "gravy".

I, too, learn something every day. That is, in itself, a blessing.

Yeah, my house was heading to foreclosure about a year ago - so I went back to day claims. Steady work is the way to pay the bills in times like these. I am back with the IA that I started with 17 years ago...
