NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- A series of earthquakes,
the largest with a preliminary magnitude estimated at 6.5, shook the
Hawaiian islands Sunday morning, reportedly causing some structural
damage and landslides on Hawaii and power outages in Hawaii and in
Honolulu on Oahu.
The U.S. Geological
Survey reported several aftershocks. It said no damage reports were
immediately available, but Hawaiian media outlets were reporting
landslides and damage to buildings in the Kona area.
The National Weather Service's Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center, which reported the largest quake at a magnitude
of 6.5, said no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists.
The quake occurred shortly after 7 a.m. off the Big Island's Waikoloa coast.
Kona appears to have taken the brunt of the quake. Kona Community
Hospital reported structural damage and multiple landslides were
reported on the Hamakua Highway, according to Hawaii media reports
citing local officials.

I've been listening to the reports on the news and it sounds like there could be a bit of damages out of this, although how severe and widespread is yet to be determined. Sounds like it was a long quake timewise which would compound the damages sustained. |

I would have figured that with a 6.6, you would have seen some more severe damaged to the housing than just cracks in a ceiling.
