We just had a 5.8 earthquake near Chino Hills, CA (about 30 miles from downtown LA).  We felt it here in San Diego, more than a hundred miles away.  As a reference for those unfamiliar with the Richter Scale, each .1 is exponentially higher than the .1 before it.  The Northridge Earthquake was a 6.7 and therefore many many times more powerful.  A 5.8 is on the high side of moderate and will likely create some damage, much of it under the deductible.

I wouldn't pack my bags on this one, but a couple people may get some work.

As you can see from the link, it has been downgraded to a 5.4 (I posted originally a few minutes after it happened). The radio is saying there is mild damage. I know the phones were out after the quake when I tried to call a geotech engineer in Yorba Linda right after the quake. Phone service was restored by this afternoon. The geotech says some of his books fell off the shelf. He was within five miles of the epicenter.

I wouldn't expect a massive call out on this one. But within a couple days I should know. My company has over 2,000 DIC earthquake policies, so the claims should start rolling in within 48 hours if there are going to be significant claims over this.

To illustrate the difference between a 5.4 earthquake and a 6.7 earthquake, today's Claim eNews is reporting that yesterday's quake released 1% of the energy released by the Northridge earthquake in 1994.

That was just a test run.......The next one will be bigger. I have a chunk of friends and relatives there and they said this one wasn't much different then the couple they had in 04/05 in Palm Springs and Yucaipa, but I guess there is a little bit of damage from this one. Doubt it will be an event to call out IA's.

By the time I left work yesterday, about 29 hours after the event we had one earthquake claim.  Don't start packing the station wagon and heading west yet.

We just had a 5.8 along the San Andreas Fault in the vicinity of Mexicali on the U. S. border about 100 miles east of San Diego. Some of my co-workers felt it. I missed it while talking on the phone. This is just a bit shy of a major quake (usually 6.5 or above) and is unlikely to do much damage.
