Hi Dave, as I recal you are a restoration person, so likely carry more tools than I do.

...smart tool, ...electronic compass

I wasn't sure if my tools were smart or not... do you mean this thing? A level? Looks like a great tool, but I wouldn't use it often enough to keep it on my belt. Just seeing if there is another tool out there I don't know about - always learning. I keep a 4' level in my van - great for photos showing ridges in a wet wood floor or warping subfloor in a mobile home.

I have an angle finding compass, not electronic, that helps for estimating complex floor plans with angles, but it doesn't weigh much.  Sounds like you have a great system that works for you.  My system includes a trip out to the van to get rid of the 50' tape, etc when I get to the interior - which enables me to survive sans-suspenders.

Bob

Yes it is like that only smaller.
I am a tool guy and like to find the use the tools of the trade to help me do my job better and quicker in estimating . I am anal about having certain tool items with me. I should just go back to the truck like you do it sounds alot easier and I am sure my back would agree....

Estimating is living on the edge between greed and fear

You guys need one o' them three wheeled little carts that the mail man uses to haul his several hundred pounds of mail around.

You could put in all of your tools, a fold-out table and chair, desktop computer and printer/scanner/fax/color copier, a small refrigerator for a cool refreshing beverage and a built in closet in case your clothes become soiled................................................
