Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on adjusting crop losses? I have looked at some in the past, but it's been a while and I am not sure how the industry has changed. Thanks.

Have you looked at this site http://www.rma.usda.gov/policies/ There are policies and a lot of related info to crop claims. Kind of like reading the encyclopedia Britannica. If you have a specific claim, I would just demand a copy of the policy and endorsements for that specific loss.

If you haven't owned a farm and know crops inside and out you will not do well in crop insurance. I was a broker in a large rural agency for twenty years and we sold a lot of crop insurance. The adjusters that went out knew the crops they were adjusting from personal experience and could talk with authority to any farmer I had. We had some farmers that tried to enlarge their estimated crop yield and thus their claims but these guys could tell just by walking into the field what the yeild would have been and not much got by them. Bob, I don't think you'd get too far asking for a policy if you don't know the difference between one crop and another. I've sold crop insurance, I've been out when the claims were adjusted and there is no way in the world I would ever leave property and liaiblity adjusting for crop claims. KLS

Yeah, there are times when the best thing to do is refuse a file that is out of ones area of expertise. I do not consider myself an expert at Crop losses. Having said that, I prefer Ray's attitude "someone is going to close these claims - may as well be me". In a perfect world, the perfect and most experienced adjuster is assigned to every claim. In the real world, the claims examiner accepted a better job and you are reporting to the new guy - and maybe there isn't anyone else around who is any better than I am trying to make sense out of a new claim that got assigned to our office. Every area has it's specialty - like in the Midwest you folks know crops. I know earthquake damage real well, but would welcome you to work alongside me next time the big one hits. People that can think on their feet can do anything they set their mind to do. Experience does help, no doubt.
