I was told by the Bank that if you Wanna Work Flood this coming year - there better be some storms.

Meanwhile I am driving first 50 miles free on most of these "flat rate" property loses, but at least it is keeping me from getting too rusty...

It is a 4 hour round trip to the closest NFIP class.  And you have to do it every year.  I see on the NFIP site they have an online training system for AGENTS, and I hope they will do that for adjusters some day.

I blew a whole day going to a seminar for CITIZENS Florida (plus did it again online for another vendor that wouldn't accept the other vender's cert, which was an error).  Then no storms...

Bob,

I have had a NFIP number for many years and I renew it every other year or so.

I honestly don't know how many miles I've driven going to seminars or how many hours I've spent listening to someone mumble while reading what I had in front of me.

The NFIP seminars are better but .............................

I've worked a total of 29 flood claims in my somewhat storied career. Got copies of 'em all.

It's so Ironic. I have done more flood files than you, and I don't have an NFIP cert. I just did the "Katrina only" State Farm class, and worked clean up for them in Slidell. The guys teaching for State Farm were very sharp (Michael Ferrier, Dave Plummer, Ed Olive). But we didn't get NFIP numbers.

I got my California license, which is a very hard one to get - then they waive the requirement for the recent fires, and previously waived requirements on earthquakes that I worked.

Oh well, better to have the cert's than not. I am debating getting NFIP certified, guess it depends on my file load as the class time approaches.

Speaking of flood, I just added about a dozen photos to the gallery, under the Katrina category.
Here's some bonus ones of Slidell, which is near where the eye of the storm made landfall. Lot's of boats where they don't belong.

Trying to sign up for one of the classes

Roy's post of 12-21-07 above has link to info, or go here to the NFIP page for adjusters  http://www.fema.gov/business/nfip/claimsadj.shtm
That will link to the classes, etc.
------------------------------------------------------------
Here's something copied from a recent PDF doc from FEMA-NFIP:

FEMA is requiring all independent adjusters who adjust flood losses under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to attend a 2008 NFIP Claims Presentation. Beginning May 1, 2008, there will be modifications to the NFIP adjuster certification process, and it is imperative that you attend at least one NFIP Claims Presentation to maintain your "Active" status. "Active" adjusters who do not attend a 2008 NFIP Claims Presentation will be reclassified "Inactive," which may affect your eligibility to adjust NFIP flood claims.

If you are not NFIP flood certified and seek certification, you must attend a 2008 NFIP Claims Presentation as one of the prerequisites for obtaining certification. Please visit the FEMA website at www.fema.gov/business/nfip/participation.shtm for the minimum qualifications and other information about adjuster participation. You must complete a claims presentation and submit your application for certification to the NFIP Bureau and Statistical Agent no later than May 15, 2008. The NFIP Adjuster Certification Application will be available at the end of each claims presentation; you can also obtain it online at http://www.fema.gov/pdf/nfip/adj_cert_app.pdf.

All attendees must register in advance, using the enclosed 2008 NFIP Claims Presentation Schedule and Registration Form. Review the dates and locations, make your selection, then complete the Registration Form and mail it with your $10.00 check or money order—do not send cash—to the address on the form. Online registration is not available.

We expect large attendance at each location, so register early. Please do not call the NFIP Bureau and Statistical Agent about the status of your registration. Once your Registration Form has been processed, a confirmation letter will be mailed to the address you provided on the form.
----------------------------------------------------------
In typical cryptic fashion, the NFIP does not always clearly define the terms they use.  As you muck through that data, you will hear them talk about "WYO" programs, which means Write Your Own.

More than 1/2 of the flood policies out there are sold through State Farm, Alstate, etc.  those are WYO scenario's, where the government has the major insurance companies "label" the NFIP policy as the carrier's product, but they get re-imbursed by the government for claim settlements, etc.

As you read the Flood literature, they will refer to a "WYO Adjuster" - and you can be really "blank" if you don't know they are talking about an adjuster with State Farm, Allstate, etc.

That is your first clue as you step into the murky world of learning the Flood program.

I go each year to stay certified, which is a requirement. This whole picture gets muddled when you read the NFIP instructions. Many new people take up space and slots that should be available to people who need to attend ( have a NFIP number). If you do not have between 3 to 4 years of verifyable experience in property adjusting do not waste your time and $10.00.

In some WYO situations you can jump ahead of the time requirements if the WYO will "kiss" all of your work. Ask your WYO to go to bat for you.

I sent paperwork for NFIP in San Antonio a month ago and have heard nothing.  Any idea how long it takes to process an application?

Tom and I received our letters of registration 35 days after I sent in the applications.  This was a little slower than previous years.  Maybe they are getting more requests this year.  Keep checking the mail box, it probably will be there any day now.

If you don't get the notification letter, you should go anyway.  I've never seen them turn people away.  The one in Mobile in 2006 had what seemed like a hundred unregistered attendees show up.  Some of them didn't even know what they were attending.  They just knew it was some kind of "FEMA" training.  They made room for them.
