Insurers may face up to $8 billion NZ quake hit

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The insurance industry faces damage claims of between $3.5 billion and $8 billion from Tuesday's devastating earthquake around Christchurch, New Zealand, catastrophe modeling firm Air Worldwide said.

Those estimates are preliminary, and the quake could still end up being the costliest disaster for the global insurance industry in nearly three years. It is not expected to be enough, however, to arrest a sharp multiyear decline in insurance and reinsurance pricing.

ShakeMap is a product of the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program Two strong earthquakes have shaken the Greenbrier area yet again this morning after a week of continued tremors that have been rising in magnitude.

Early Friday Morning, the largest earthquake to hit Arkansas in recent memory rattled residents in Faulkner County. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirms it was 4.3 in magnitude and was centered three miles northeast of Greenbrier at 2:13 a.m.
